The two-queue E/1-L polling model with regularly varying service and/or switchover times

چکیده

We consider the cyclic polling system with two queues. One queue is served according to the exhaustive discipline, and the other queue is served according to the 1-limited discipline. At least one of the service and/or switchover times has a regularly varying tail. We obtain the tail behavior of the waiting time distributions. When one of the service and/or switchover times has an infinite second moment, we derive the heavy-traffic behavior of the waiting time distribution at the 1-limited queue. 1991 Mathematical Subject Classification: 60K25, 90B22.

Relating polling models with zero and nonzero switchover times

We consider a system of N queues served by a single server in cyclic order. Each queue has its own distinct Poisson arrival stream and its own distinct general service-time distribution (asymmetric queues), and each queue has its own distinct distribution of switchover time (the time required for the server to travel from that queue to the next). We consider two versions of this classical polli...

Setups in Polling Models: Does It Make Sense to Set up If No Work Is Waiting?

We compare two versions of a symmetric two-queue polling model with switchover times and setup times. The SI version has State-Independent setups, according to which the server sets up at the polled queue whether or not work is waiting there; and the SD version has State-Dependent setups, according to which the server sets up only when work is waiting at the polled queue. Naive intuition would ...

A Polling Model with Retrial Customers

A polling model with n stations and switchover times is considered. The customers are of n different types, arrive to the system according to the Poisson distribution in batches of random size, and if they find the server unavailable, they start to make retrials until succeed to find a position for service. Each batch may contain customers of different types while the numbers of customers belon...

When Does Forced Idle Time Improve Performance in Polling Models?

Sarkar and Zangwill (1991) showed by numerical examples that reduction in setup times can, surprisingly, actually increase work in process in some cyclic production systems (that is, reduction in switchover times can increase waiting times in some polling models). We present, for polling models with exhaustive and gated service disciplines, some explicit formulas that provide additional insight...

A two-queue polling model with priority on one queue and heavy-tailed On/Off sources: a heavy-traffic limit

We consider a single-server polling system consisting of two queues of fluid with arrival process generated by a big number of heavy-tailed On/Off sources, and application in road traffic and communication systems. Classj fluid is assigned to queue j, j = 1,2. Server 2 visits both queues to process or let pass through it the corresponding fluid class. If there is class-2 fluid in the system, it...
